Meet the Tiny Device Holding Back the Bubbles

A muselet is the wire cage fitted over the cork of a bottle of Champagne or other sparkling drink. Its job is simple but important: it keeps the pressurized cork securely inside the bottle until you are ready to open it. The name comes from French and is related to the word for a muzzle.

You have almost certainly handled a muselet, even if you never knew what to call it. It is that twisty little arrangement of wire hiding beneath the foil on a bottle of bubbly—the part you loosen while keeping a cautious thumb planted on the cork.

Like a zarf, the surprisingly elegant name for a cup holder, the muselet proves that ordinary objects often have wonderfully specific names.

How Do You Pronounce “Muselet”?

Muselet is a French word, pronounced roughly mewz-LEH, with the final t silent. The exact French vowel in the first syllable does not have a perfect English equivalent, so there is no need to tie your tongue into a bow over it.

The plural is muselets, although you may also hear English speakers call them wire cages, wire hoods, or Champagne wires.

According to the Académie française’s definition of muselet, the word is related to museau, meaning an animal’s muzzle or snout. That makes the name rather literal: the wire cage “muzzles” the cork, restraining it before it can make a break for freedom.

It is a charmingly dramatic name for something that spends most of its life under a sheet of foil.

Why Does a Champagne Cork Need a Cage?

The short answer is pressure—and plenty of it.

A bottle of Champagne typically contains pressure in the range of 5 to 6 bar, or roughly three times the pressure in a car tire. That pressure comes from carbon dioxide dissolved in the wine during its production. When the bottle is opened, the gas begins escaping, producing the stream of bubbles that makes sparkling wine sparkle.

The cork is designed to form a tight seal, but pressure inside the bottle is constantly pushing against it. Without something securing the cork, it could loosen, leak, or launch unexpectedly.

That is where the muselet earns its keep. It grips the cork from above and anchors beneath the raised ring around the bottle’s neck. The result is a small but strong restraint system that holds everything in place during storage, shipping, chilling, and the occasional bumpy ride home from the store.

Muselets are not limited to Champagne. They may also appear on other sparkling wines, certain beers, and sparkling ciders—any beverage whose cork needs help resisting internal pressure.

The Three Parts of a Muselet

A modern muselet may look like a simple tangle of wire, but it is a carefully designed object with three main components:

  1. The cage: The upper wire structure fits over the cork and usually has four legs.
  2. The lower ring: Sometimes called the belt, this wire circles the bottle’s neck and holds the cage beneath the glass rim.
  3. The plaque: This is the small metal disc sitting on top of the cork.

The plaque is not merely decorative. It helps spread the force across the top of the cork and prevents the wire from cutting into the softer material. It also provides a convenient miniature billboard for the producer’s name, crest, logo, or artwork.

These components are manufactured together so that the muselet can be fitted quickly and securely. The twisted loop at the side allows the drinker to loosen the lower ring without needing pliers, scissors, or the assistance of a particularly determined blacksmith.

Before the Muselet, Opening Bubbly Was Even Trickier

Early sparkling-wine producers faced a stubborn problem: how do you keep a stopper inside a bottle that is actively trying to eject it?

Before modern wire cages, stoppers were secured using materials such as string and wire. These methods could be awkward to apply, inconsistent, or difficult for customers to remove. Wire could also press into the cork, damaging it and contributing to leaks.

An important breakthrough came on July 5, 1844, when Champagne merchant Adolphe Jacquesson patented a method of placing a small piece of tinplate between the cork and its ties. This plate distributed the pressure and helped stop the binding material from becoming embedded in the cork.

It is common to see Jacquesson described simply as the inventor of the muselet. The full story, however, developed in stages. His metal plate was a crucial ancestor of the modern design, while manufacturers continued improving cork-fastening systems throughout the 19th century.

Preformed wire cages resembling today’s muselets appeared around the 1880s. Later innovations made them easier to apply by machine and easier for consumers to untwist by hand. Gradually, the neat wire cage replaced the more cumbersome combinations of string and separately attached wire. In other words, the muselet was not born fully formed. It was refined over decades—one twist, ring, and tiny metal cap at a time.

The Plaque Has Its Own Fan Club

The round metal plate on top of the cork is properly called a plaque de muselet, although plaque or capsule is often used for short.

Because producers decorate plaques with logos, colors, commemorative designs, and limited-edition artwork, they have become collectible objects. Some enthusiasts own thousands of them and organize their collections by Champagne house, region, design, or rarity.

Naturally, collectors have their own wonderfully obscure name: placomusophiles. The hobby is called placomusophilia. Both terms combine the idea of the plaque with a love of collecting.

A placomusophile might hunt for discontinued designs, trade duplicates with other collectors, or carefully remove plaques without bending them. The wire cage itself is usually less desirable, although especially unusual muselets can also attract attention.

If placomusophile appeals to you, you may enjoy meeting more funny-sounding words that are completely real. It is a fine word to casually deploy at a party, preferably before anyone becomes three sheets to the wind.

How to Open a Bottle with a Muselet Safely

The muselet prevents premature popping, but once you loosen it, you become responsible for the cork. A flying cork can cause an injury or break something across the room, so point the bottle away from people, pets, windows, and priceless family heirlooms.

For a calm, controlled opening:

  1. Chill the bottle properly. Champagne is commonly served at about 46–50°F, or 8–10°C. A chilled bottle is also easier and safer to open than a warm, agitated one.
  2. Remove the foil while holding the cork. Once the top is exposed, keep a hand or thumb firmly over it.
  3. Untwist and loosen the muselet. Maintain control of the cork as you remove the cage.
  4. Tilt the bottle away from everyone. An angle of approximately 30 to 45 degrees is recommended.
  5. Grip the cork and rotate the bottle. Turning the bottle gives you greater control than aggressively twisting or pulling the cork.
  6. Let the cork emerge slowly. Aim for a restrained sigh rather than a cannon blast.

The official Champagne serving guidance recommends holding the cork firmly, rotating the bottle gently, and never pointing it toward another person.

The spectacular pop seen in movies may look festive, but a quieter opening wastes less wine and keeps the cork out of your lampshade.

A Small Word Worth Celebrating

The muselet is easy to overlook. After all, it is usually discarded within seconds of doing its job. Yet this pocket-sized piece of engineering protects the cork, contains substantial pressure, carries a producer’s branding, and connects today’s celebrations with nearly two centuries of sparkling-wine history.

It also gives us an excellent word—specific, useful, and just strange enough to be memorable.

So, the next time you unwrap a bottle of bubbly, pause before tossing aside the wire cage. You are not merely removing “that twisty thing.” You are releasing the muselet, the tiny muzzle that has been patiently holding back the party.
